Microsoft has jazzed up its video conferencing platform with a new feature that brings custom backgrounds to it. According to Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President for Microsoft 365, the free version of Teams will now support custom backgrounds. “With so many people moving suddenly to remote work, the free version of Teams has become an important way for teams to meet and collaborate online. We want to help them continue to connect effectively, so we’re bringing several new features to this version of Teams,” Spataro wrote in a blog post. Zoom, which has become quite a popular choice, already has the option of customised backgrounds.
He further wrote, “Today, we are announcing the rollout of new custom background effects in Teams, along with new features in the free version of Teams. It’s all about enabling you and your team to work productively, collaboratively, and with everyone’s well-being in mind.”
While a lot of working professionals are now quite used to working from home, the messy backgrounds do seem to hinder in video calls. Teams will now have “a collection of preset images that range from professional (a modern office) to pretty silly (a cartoonish beach scene),” wrote Spataro in the blog post.
Users will also have the option to customise backgrounds by uploading their own images. “No need for a green screen, or even a blank wall. Teams uses a highly trained model that differentiates the subject from their background and can impose a custom background over everything else, making it easy and fast to start expressing yourself in all your meetings,” said Spataro.
Custom background effects help you design the video experience that works best for you—whether you need to hide a mess of toys or just want a funny background photo to give your team a laugh, as per Microsoft.
Meanwhile, new features in the free version of Teams bring the meeting-scheduling capabilities as well.
